Honey Bees

Even the beloved honey bee can wreck havoc on a house. In many cases, honey bees will take up residence within the walls of a house. There, they will occupy from 4-9 gallons of space filling the wall with honey. Beyond that, they have been known to secrete water onto the surrounding Sheetrock, dissolving the Sheetrock in order to expand their hive. In some cases they may actually break through to the inside of a house and begin flying around by the hundreds–definitely not a desirable situation. So, a homeowner may apply insecticide, killing the bees. Now there are gallons of honey remaining inside the wall. The honey attracts a host of other pests including ants, cockroaches, mice, rats… all pests that love sweet food. Now you have a real problem.

Note that honey bees swarming on or near your home are swarming around their queen, looking for a new home to occupy. Over time, they’ll expand their home, and have been known to completely bore through an outside wall and emerge into a house. The holes they create can host other pests, invite moisture damage and thus compromise the integrity of a wooden structure.

Ground Bees

Then, there’s the ground bee. Like carpenter bees, ground bees are solitary individuals, unlikely to sting unless greatly provoked. They make their nest in weak, unhealthy dry lawns. You’re likely to see a number of nests in an area. It can be a bit unnerving and make relaxing in your backyard difficult amidst the buzzing of the bees. But beyond that, yellow jackets also live in holes in the ground, and are attracted to similar soil conditions. Imagine thinking you’re happily tolerating ground bees, only to find a similar looking hole you just stepped on contained a yellow jacket nest.

Bumble Bees

The bumble bee, like the honey bee, is a highly beneficial pollinator. They tend to take up residence in an old abandoned mattress, car cushion or out building. Let’s start with some astonishing facts about fleas:

• Fleas are fast and can travel at speeds up to one mile per hour. In flea distance, this is equal to over 100 miles per hour. Result: The fleas that are anywhere within 24 miles of your home could be in your home tomorrow!
• But it gets even crazier. The flea that found its way into your home can survive there for up to a year–for two months without food!
• Flea eggs last a long time, and can lie dormant for up to 2 years before hatching. So, that flea problem you think you got under control a year and a half ago could suddenly come back.
• How many fleas could there be? The fleas on your pet represent only 5% of the fleas in your home, because that’s about how often they’re actually on a pet. One estimate has it that for every flea you find on your dog or cat, there are 75,100 additional fleas living in the house!

Flea Control: Why bother?

Fleas defecate as they feed, and so transmit disease and parasites such as tapeworms. When the infected areas are scratched, the murine typhus pathogen can be transmitted from their infected feces into the wound. Fleas are responsible for transmitting the plague which decimated medieval Europe taking 25 million lives. More commonly, fleas cause allergic dermatitis in some pets…and people.

For these reasons and more, a flea problem can be far more than a problem for your pets to endure. If you notice fleas on your pets, the safety of your family is at risk.

Treat the Entire House

As noted, flea eggs can lie dormant for up to 2 years before hatching. So it’s going to take a long term strategy to ensure a flea infestation is under control. Treating you pet isn’t enough. Remember, for every flea you see on your pet, there are over 75,000 others in your house. You’ll need to treat your entire house, and your yard at the least, and persistently repeat the treatment until every dormant egg has hatched–over a period of a couple years.

Vacuum Often, and Effectively

Salt can eat through flea eggs, so sprinkling salt on the carpets before vacuuming can strengthen the effect. It’s been suggested that you vacuum up a few teaspoons of flea powder into the bag to help kill the fleas you vacuum up. Be sure to discard the vacuum bag outside the home, sealing it in a plastic bag.

Sprays and Foggers

Sprays containing methoprine or chlorpyrifos have the residual ability to kill hatching fleas, and they can be used on furniture and carpets, but not directly on your pets. Flea foggers can be effective when used twice—three to six weeks apart, but all people and animals must be removed from the house during use.

Treat Your Yard Simultaneously

As you treat your home and pets, simultaneously treat your yard at 14-day intervals. This can be effective on non-rainy days any time of year except during the cold winter months. If you yard is large spray it with chlorpyrifos. If smaller, dust with malathion or diazinon following the directions on the label.

Treat all pets in your household at the same time, and simultaneously as you treat your home and yard. A flea shampoo followed by applying a flea repellent is a good start. If you have young pets, you’ll need a product safe for them vs. using a product made for adult pets. Carefully follow the directions on the label to avoid harm to your pet.

Flea collars have limited effectiveness. They can irritate young pets, and at best, are effective in keeping fleas off the head and neck area.

Bald faced hornets look like yellow jackets with white stripes instead of yellow stripes. They build a paper nest that is pear-shaped and grows to the size of a basket ball. There’s an entrance hole near the bottom of the nest.

Bald Faced Hornet Control – Where nests are likely to exist.

You’re most likely to find a bald faced hornet nest in a hollow tree, a chimney, a wall cavity, in the soffits overhanging the side of your home at the edge of your roof, and similar protected areas.

Bald Faced Hornet Control – An ounce of prevention…

Since we’re into the month of June, you’ve missed the opportunity to prevent bald faced hornets this year. The best time to prevent bald faced hornets is in the fall. In the fall Queens are seeking a place to hibernate, then emerge the next year to create a new colony. If you see hornets congregating near your home in the fall, spray them immediately with hornet and wasp spray.

Bald Faced Hornet Control – When is it time?

Sometime during the month of June the queen will have established her colony, yet the colony is still relatively small. This is the best time of year to control bald faced hornets–before the nest grows to basketball size later in the summer with thousands of hornets.

The ideal situation is a night when the temperature is below 50 degrees F. The hornets are less active at night, and have trouble flying in temperatures below 50.

Bald Faced Hornet Control – how to get rid of white faced hornet nest

Generally, if you leave bald faced hornets alone, they’ll leave you alone. They actually perform a valuable function helping rid an area of pests. However, if you or someone in the family is allergic to hornet stings, you may not want to take chances.

Here’s what to do: Direct a stream of wasp and hornet spray toward the entrance hole near the bottom of the nest. Continue to spray until the can is empty. This will take about a minute. If the nest is large, have a back-up can–the job may take both cans.

Make sure the spray is labeled specifically for wasp and hornet control. Other insect sprays are not designed for this task, and if you use them you may end up getting stung multiple times! Test the spray stream first, realizing that the accurate spraying distance given on the label may be further by as much as 50% than the actual accurate spraying distance you experience. You want the spray to enter the nest hole with a full force stream (before the distance at which the spray would begin to weaken and scatter).

Remember, the ideal time is a cool night. Don’t try to do this during a hot summer day! Wear multiple layers of loose clothing, leather gloves and a large brimmed hat with netting over it. Tape all the openings. Imagine angry hornets emerging from the nest–you don’t want them to have access to any bare skin!

Ensure that there are no other people, children or pets anywhere near the nest before you begin spraying. Also, have an open route of escape if things go wrong. You’ll need to be able get at least 100 yards away (length of a football field) which is the distance angry hornets have been known to pursue their target.

After spraying the nest, wait a week before removing the nest to ensure that there is no activity.

Identifying Ground Bees – It’s the time of year when they’re around.

How do you know if your have a ground bee problem? The first sign is probably noticing a collection of small dirt mounds on your lawn. A closer look will reveal that there is a small hole next to the dirt mound, and just one bee is leaving, entering or buzzing around the hole. The bee will range from 1/2 to 3/4 inch. You’re most likely to discover ground bees in your lawn during March through July.

The good news is that ground bees are not generally aggressive. Leave them alone, and they will likely leave you alone. They can sting, so if you or anyone in your family is allergic to bee stings, or you expect to entertain guests who might be allergic to bee stings, ground bees could be a problem.

Another piece of good news is that, even though you might hate the look of all those dirt mounds on your lawn, ground bees will not damage the lawn, and are likely to only be around about 6 weeks.

So, what are the potential issues with ground bees? First of all, you want to be absolutely sure you’re dealing with ground bees. Now, let’s go back to those early – mid Spring sightings. It’s possible that it’s not a wasp. Look closely. It might be honey bees. This is an entirely different situation. With the bees removed, the next step will be to remove the honey, which could attract other pests.

Spray the mixture on cobwebs, around doors and windows, around the lawn and garden and on any surfaces where spiders lurk. In addition to having a pleasant aroma, this mixture is nontoxic.

Oils may stain or cause spots, so be sure to test the mixture on a small section of carpet or upholstery before spraying an entire surface.

Reapply the spray once a week during peak “spider seasons.”

When you travel, keep these pointers in mind to reduce the risk of your bringing bed bugs home with you:

1. When checking into a hotel, you can prevent bed bugs from coming home by first inspecting your room thoroughly for bed bugs. Look closely for them (or their signs: blood spots) in or behind the headboard of the bed, over the bed, in, on or behind the picture hanging above the bed board, in the seams of the mattress and box springs. (Bed bugs feed upon human blood at night and are somewhat messy leaving obvious stains behind.)
2. Inspect the valet stand or luggage rack thoroughly around the fabric seams to see that there are no bed bugs; after passing your inspection, place your suitcase on the stand and keep it there the entire visit; do not let the suitcase sit on the floor, which makes it more difficult to prevent bed bugs from hitching a ride and coming home with you.
3. Move your bed away from the wall of the room, and do not let linens touch the floor.
4. Check the hangers and rack in the closet before hanging your clothes there. You want to prevent bed bugs from hitching a ride home on your cloths.
5. Check nightstands and dresser drawers before placing personal items on or inside.
6. If you should find bed bugs present, please alert the hotel management that this is the case and that you would like to be moved to another room.
